about

An experiment in producing music procedurally from falling snow in March of 2015 on 126th street in New York City.
Portions of the video were cropped as individual video clips. The clips were then processed in Apple's Motion to isolate the snow against a solid black background and then exported. The clips were imported into Ableton Live and MIDI files were generated procedurally using a Max for Live plugin called Moovmi by K-Devices:

The resulting MIDI tracks were used to trigger granular synths in Reaktor and samples of vinyl clicks.
The audio tracks were then imported into Apple's Motion. The audio was used to drive parameters on filters covering each of the areas used to generate audio in sync with the sound.
The tolerance on Moovmi was altered on each track to produce a more interesting musical sound. Therefore the audio is not necessarily consonant with the snow pattern; the pattern merely provided a basis for audio creation.
